This name is provisional and has not yet been published. It has been found most frequent west of the Appalachians (AL, KY, IL, IN, MO, OH, TN) but also scattered further east (D.C.), DE, MD, NC, PA, W.Va.). In Indiana, it has been observed in Allen County, at Mounds State Park in Madison County, and at Potato Creek State Park in St. Joseph County.
A somewhat indistinct, broad-leaved form of fistulosa, generally intermediate between fistulosa and clinopodia, with probable hybrid origin. The tip of the upper lip of the flower lacks hairs, whereas those of M. fistulosa have short hairs. The heads are often in two verticels, whereas those of M. fistulsa are single. M. serotina is more of a floodplain or wet-mesic woods species, whereas M. fistulosa is more open areas, typically on the mesic to dry-mesic side.
